I Finally Grew Tired of Gaming

Good Game, Well Played.

In the last couple of months I’ve found myself spending more time scrolling through my Steam library looking for games to play than I’ve spent actually playing. At the same time I’ve amassed some new titles, most of them through giveaways at the Epic Games Store. But I’ve installed few of the games, and I’ve played even fewer. I’ve always been an avid gamer, but lately gaming has not given me the same level of childish satisfaction it used to.

It feels like it’s time to take a proper break from gaming.

The infamous Cyberpunk 2077 was the final nail in the coffin. At first sight, the game was truly amazing. But after a while, as I got under the skin of one of the most hyped games in recent years, it started to fall apart like a house of cards. The story is shallow and not very intriguing. Night City was breathtaking at first, but soon started to feel bland, boring, and void of life and real atmosphere. After having tried and failed at least 15 times on a mission in the desert outside of Night City, I’d had enough - not just of the disappointment Cyberpunk 2077 turned out to be, but of gaming in general.

So I put away my SteelSeries and Stadia controllers, unsubscribed from all the gaming related newsletters, unfollowed a crapton of gaming accounts on Twitter, and uninstalled most of the games on my laptop.

That’s another sign I’m off the gaming wagon, by the way; that laptop. It’s my work laptop, but it has a decent graphics card and it’s been my gaming PC for the last few years. But I’ll soon have to replace it in favor of a MacBook Pro, which isn’t suited for gaming. Because of that I won’t, for the first time in at least 30 years, have access to proper gaming hardware. Under normal circumstances, an event like that would prompt a hunt for a new gaming rig, but not this time. These days, my computer needs are covered by an 8 years old Dell laptop running Manjaro.

But I suspect that this is just a temporary, although potentially long, gaming hiatus. I recently received a very generous Steam gift card, and I’m sure I will find good use of the money when the gamer eventually returns.

One day.
