Digital Renovation
For a long time now I’ve been looking for another theme for the site. The previous one got old rather quickly, but I was unable to find a new theme I liked. The web isn’t actually filled to the brim with Hugo themes, and I don’t have the skills or energy to make one myself from scratch. But late last year, I stumbled across Diary, and ended up spending much of New Year’s Eve modifying it for my needs.
This new visual iteration of the site marks the return of cover images and dark mode. I had a lot of fun (and by “fun” I mean “frustrations”) getting the theme to work properly with A Picture A Day, a feature that is force fed to the rest of the site with the use of an iframe. After a lot of tweaking, it’s almost working as it should, which is good enough for me. The average visitor probably won’t even notice that something is a bit off1.
Please don’t look at any of the JavaScript, CSS or HTML. I used a really big hammer and a minimal amount of finesse to get everything to look nice.
In the past, a site redesign has sometimes brought me out of my writing hiatus. Will this redesign have the same effect? I doubt it, but at least it will give you something new to look at when you desperately refresh the site in hope of a new post.
You will notice, of course, since you are much smarter and have a greater attention to detail than the average visitor. Right? ↩︎
